"The Water Rat... got out the luncheon basket and packet a simple meal in which... he took care to include a yard of long French bread, a sausage out of which the garlic sang, some cheese which lay down and cried, and a long-necked straw-covered flask wherein lay bottled sunshine". Wind in the Willows. And did Ratty pack paper plates and plastic cutlery? We think not! As Nigel Slater says "Nothing takes the edge off a picnic like drinking wine or, worse, champagne, out of paper cups".
That's why Elly and Evie Pace started Life's a Picnic: they didn't just want to eat great picnic food and mess about in boats - they wanted 'luncheon hampers' that are classy, fun and totally individual. And everything else has followed on from there. Based in Bristol and Nailsworth, in the Cotswolds, they do all the sewing and leatherwork themselves, as well as sourcing the fabrics and hamper contents from all over the country.
